A racing yacht taking part in a race and heading to the finishing line in Plymouth ended up going aground in Crownhill Bay in the early hours of 09/05/13. Both Plymouth All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats were launched. A coastguard managed to get onto the beach and assist the skipper off his boat and onto the beach. They then required further assistance to get off the beach as the surf was breaking over the cliff steps. The Inshore Lifeboat veered down into the bay in order to place a crewman ashore who was able to assist the yacht skipper and coastguard off the beach. The video shows the ILB veering down.
